YP - The Real Yellow Pages SM - helps you find the right local businesses to meet your specific needs. Search results are sorted by a combination of factors to give you a set of choices in response to your search criteria. These factors are similar to those you might use to determine which business to select from a local Yellow Pages directory, including proximity to where you are searching, expertise in the specific services or products you need, and comprehensive business information to help evaluate a business's suitability for you. “Preferred” listings, or those with featured website buttons, indicate YP advertisers who directly provide information about their businesses to help consumers make more informed buying decisions. YP advertisers receive higher placement in the default ordering of search results and may appear in sponsored listings on the top, side, or bottom of the search results page.
At the southern end of Los Angeles’ South Bay lies the beach community of Torrance. While the city expands east across 405 freeway, all eyes in Torrance are aimed to the west, where the one-and-a-half mile stretch of beach is wide open to wintertime Pacific Ocean swells. WATCH: Stream the Live Torrance Beach Cam Here The shores of Torrance offer up beachbreak waves suitable for all types of surfer – from beginner to advanced, depending on swell size – making it a go-to spot for anyone looking to catch waves in the South Bay. What’s more, since Torrance is tucked away like the corner pocket of Los Angeles County’s sprawling coastline, the crowds can be less hectic than other standout spots to the north, including El Porto and Malibu. And while a majority of the surfing focus in the Torrance and Palos Verdes area revolves around other wintertime surf spots in the area, that doesn’t mean the beachbreaks of Torrance beach aren’t worth checking out. PLAN AHEAD: Check Out the Torrance Beach Forecast Here Nope, that’s not Puerto Escondido. That’s Torrance Beach. Photo: Steve Ekenstam Best Conditions Generally speaking, most of the South Bay caters to wintertime swells. West, northwest direction is best for Torrance. And if you can, catch it on a medium-to-higher tide. Low tide tends to close out the South Bay’s beachbreaks. Crowd Factor Just like Los Angeles as a whole, the surfing scene in the City of Angels is a congested hodgepodge. And although Torrance is a bit mellower than its neighbors to the north (ahem, El Porto, Venice and Malibu), it’s still fairly crowded. Depends on the day and the expected swell. Alex Gray, local South Bay legend, tucks into a Torrance cylinder. Photo: Michael Carlson Local Legends From back in the day with founding fathers of South Bay surfing like LeRoy Grannis and Dale Velzy, to today with local heroes like Alex Gray and Greg Browning, Torrance, RAT (Right After Torrance) Beach, and other Palos Verdes surf spots are home to a rich waveriding past and a bright surfing future. Catch it on the right wintertime swell, and you’re bound to see a couple South Bay legends tucking into Torrance beach tubes. What Board to Ride More so than not, it’s smaller sized surf. And that means, the more foam the better. Longboards, foam boards, and anything that’ll float on a gutless swell – those are the boards you’ll want to grab when surfing Torrance. But when it gets big, you’ll want grab your high-performance shortboard to knife it under the lip. Pro Tip(s) “If it’s your first time paddling out, ” says anonymous local, “find your own peak. It’s a big beach. ” And also – as always – know your limits, and respect the locals. A lone Torrance peak rolls in unridden.
